One of these (rs35652124) is a functional SNP located in the NFE2L2 promoter. No individual SNP was associated with risk of Parkinson’s disease. Conclusion: Our results support the hypothesis that variation in the NFE2L2 gene, encoding a central protein in the cellular protection against oxidative stress, may contribute to the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease. Functional studies are now needed to explore these results further.]]> Wed 11 Apr 2018 14:07:28 AEST ]]> Prevalence and correlates of low back pain among occupational therapy students in Northern Queensland https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:4567 Wed 11 Apr 2018 10:36:33 AEST ]]> When life's a pain: perceived stress and psychosocial factors in women with arthritis transitioning from midlife to older age https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:13381 Wed 11 Apr 2018 09:54:43 AEST ]]> The influence of perceived stress on the onset of arthritis in women: findings from the Australian longitudinal study on women's health https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:18227 Wed 11 Apr 2018 09:14:20 AEST ]]> IL-4Ra blockade reduces influenza-associated morbidity in a murine model of allergic asthma https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:39240 h2 signalling, improved their outcomes. Methods: Male BALB/c mice were intranasally sensitized with house dust mite antigen (Der p 1) for 2 weeks; the mice were then inoculated intranasally with a single dose of pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1). The mice were administered intraperitoneally anti-IL-4Rα through either a prophylactic or a therapeutic treatment strategy. Results: Infection with pH1N1 of mice sensitized to house dust mite (HDM) led to a 24% loss in weight by day 7 of infection (versus 14% in non-sensitized mice; p < .05). This was accompanied by increased viral load in the airways and a dampened anti-viral host responses to the infection. Treatment of HDM sensitized mice with a monoclonal antibody against IL-4Rα prior to or following pH1N1 infection prevented the excess weight loss, reduced the viral load in the lungs and ameliorated airway eosinophilia and systemic inflammation related to the pH1N1 infection. Conclusion: Together, these data implicate allergic asthma as a significant risk factor for H1N1-related morbidity and reveal a potential therapeutic role for IL-4Rα signalling blockade in reducing the severity of influenza infection in those with allergic airway disease.]]> Wed 10 Aug 2022 08:53:16 AEST ]]> Functional significance and risk factors for lymphocele formation after renal transplantation https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:48956 Tue 18 Apr 2023 15:35:05 AEST ]]> Pioglitazone after ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:24617 Thu 17 Feb 2022 09:26:56 AEDT ]]> Association between Australian adolescent alcohol use and alcohol use risk and protective factors in 2011 and 2014 https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:34413 Thu 04 Nov 2021 10:38:35 AEDT ]]> The intron 3 16 bp duplication polymorphism of p53 (rs17878362) is not associated with increased risk of developing triple-negative breast cancer https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:41461 TP53 vary depending on the subtype, such that ER-negative tumours have a high rate, and in ER-positive tumours they are less common. Previous studies have implicated the intronic polymorphism in TP53 (rs17878362; or PIN3) with an increased risk of developing breast cancer, although little has been discerned on its prevalence in different subtypes. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of the PIN3 genotype in the blood of cohorts with ER-positive and the ER-negative subtype TNBC, and assessed its association with outcome. Methods: We genotyped 656 TNBC and 648 ER-positive breast cancer patients, along with 436 controls, and compared the prevalence of polymorphism rs17878362 in these cohorts. Results: We found there to be no differences in the prevalence of the PIN3 genotype between the ER-positive and TNBC cohorts. Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was observed in the outcome of patients in either cohort with respect to their PIN3 genotype. Conclusions: Taken together, our results do not support an association of the PIN3 genotype with increased breast cancer risk, either in ER-positive or ER-negative patients.]]> Thu 01 Sep 2022 11:19:24 AEST ]]> The association between oral hygiene and periodontitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31404 versus good OH on periodontitis across studies. The associations between oral care habits and periodontitis were also assessed. Results: A total of 50 studies were eligible; 15 were used for pooling the effect of fair OH versus good OH and poor OH versus good OH on periodontitis, with pooled odds ratios (ORs) of 2.04 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.65-2.53] and 5.01 (95% CI: 3.40-7.39), respectively. Eleven studies examined oral care habits measured according to toothbrushing regularity and dental visit frequency; pooled ORs of 0.66 (95% CI: 0.47-0.94) and 0.68 (95% CI: 0.47-0.98) were obtained, respectively. Conclusions: Fair to poor OH increases the risk of periodontitis by two- to five-fold. Ascaris-N. americanus co-infection was common (17%; 95% Confidence Interval 15%-18%). Giardia duodenalis was the main protozoan identified (13%; 95% Confidence Interval 11-14%). Baseline water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure and behaviours were poor. Although risk factors varied by age of participants and parasite species, risk factors for N. americanus infection included, generally, age in years, male sex, and socioeconomic quintile. Risk factors for Ascaris included age in years for children, and piped water to the yard for adults. In this first known assessment of community-based prevalence and associated risk factors in Timor-Leste, soil transmitted helminth infections were highly prevalent, indicating a need for soil transmitted helminth control. Few associations with water, sanitation and hygiene were evident, despite water, sanitation and hygiene being generally poor. In our water, sanitation and hygiene we will investigate implications of improving WASH on soil transmitted helminth infection in impoverished communities.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:41:23 AEDT ]]> High maternal serum ferritin in early pregnancy and risk of spontaneous preterm birth https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:28439 75th percentile (≥43 µg/l) (OR 1.49, 95 % CI 1.06, 2.10) and >90th percentile (≥68 µg/l) (OR 1.92, 95 % CI 1.25, 2.96). Increased odds of early and moderate-to-late sPTB were associated with ferritin levels >90th percentile (OR 2.50, 95 % CI 1.32, 4.73) and >75th percentile (OR 1.56, 95 % CI 1.03, 2.37), respectively. No association was found between the risk of sPTB and elevated sTfR levels or Fe deficiency. In conclusion, elevated maternal serum ferritin levels in early pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of sPTB from 34 weeks of gestation. The usefulness of early pregnancy ferritin levels in identifying women at risk of sPTB warrants further investigation.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:29:04 AEDT ]]> Reproducibility of visual assessment on mammographic density https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:4920 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:21:12 AEDT ]]> Psychological impact and risk factors associated with new onset fecal incontinence https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:23509 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:17:18 AEDT ]]> Assessment of evidence for or against contributions of Chlamydia pneumoniae infections to Alzheimer's disease etiology https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:38383 Mon 29 Jan 2024 17:45:07 AEDT ]]> Disparities in antihypertensive prescribing after stroke: linked data from the Australian stroke clinical registry https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46667 International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (Tenth Edition, Australian Modification) codes from the hospital admissions and emergency presentation data. The outcome variable and other system factors were derived from the Australian Stroke Clinical Registry dataset. Multivariable, multilevel logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with the prescription of antihypertensive medications at hospital discharge. Results: Of the 10 315 patients included, 79.0% (intracerebral hemorrhage, 74.1%; acute ischemic stroke, 79.8%) were prescribed antihypertensive medications at discharge. Prescription varied between hospital sites, with 6 sites >2 SDs below the national average for provision of antihypertensives at discharge. Prescription was also independently associated with patient and clinical factors including history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, management in an acute stroke unit, and discharge to rehabilitation. In patients with acute ischemic stroke, females (odds ratio, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.76-0.94), those who had greater stroke severity (odds ratio, 0.81; 95% CI 0.72-0.92), or dementia (odds ratio, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.52-0.81) were less likely to be prescribed. Conclusions: Prescription of antihypertensive medications poststroke varies between hospitals and according to patient factors including age, sex, stroke severity, and comorbidity profile. Implementation of targeted quality improvement initiatives at local hospitals may help to reduce the variation in prescription observed.]]> Mon 28 Nov 2022 18:46:24 AEDT ]]> Sleep and physical activity in relation to all-cause, cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality risk https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:44756 Mon 24 Oct 2022 08:42:37 AEDT ]]> Protein-coding variants implicate novel genes related to lipid homeostasis contributing to body-fat distribution https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:42033 Drosophila RNAi-knockdowns, we observed a significant increase in the total body triglyceride levels for two genes (DNAH10 and PLXND1).
